大家可能都會說stand up. 這不就是"站起來‘的意思嗎？是的，一點也沒錯。但是，to stand up后面再加一個"某人"，那它的意思就完全不同了。To stand up someone就是一個人沒有能按時去赴重要的約會，特別是和女朋友或男朋友的約會，英文的解釋是to fail to keep a date with。這里要請大家注意的是，to stand up someone也可以把最后兩個字顛倒一下，成為： to stand someone up. 這種to stand someone up的情況甚至在舉行婚禮的時候都可能發生。下面就是一個例子。這是新郎在說話。

例句: Mary was two hours late for our wedding and I was afraid she had stood me up. But she finally got there, her head all bandaged -- she'd been in an auto accident on her way to church!

另外stand up for sb.可以解釋為support. 后面有一個場景，Dan在公園里遇到三個小妹妹，很老成的在評論Dan與Serena復合的事情，其中有個小姑娘說Your whole breakup? We're on your side. 這句We're on your side意思是“我們站在你這一邊”，和stand up for是一個意思。
