報道中的pyramid scheme即我們通常說的"傳銷"，或叫pyramid selling。
我們知道pyramid是金字塔的意思，顧名思義，傳銷就是一種由上而下的運作模式，即用尖頂來比喻上線，基于上線，逐上而下次第發展許多下線的銷售模式。新會員通常都要先繳納一定的membership fee(會員費)，懷著獲得windfall(意外橫財)的期望，說服更多的人加入進來，這些人都是他的下家。在我國，傳銷于1998就被禁止，并被視為synonymous with cheating and fraud(欺詐的同義詞)。
與pyramid scheme相類似的有一個詞叫Ponzi scheme，即龐氏騙局。20世紀初，一個叫龐齊的美國商人許諾投資者以利潤回報，把新投資者的錢作為快速盈利付給最初投資的人，以誘使更多的人上當，7個月居然吸引了3萬名投資者，一年后這場騙局才被揭穿，史稱Ponzi scheme(龐氏騙局)，在中國就是"空手套白狼"。
