Three years later events were set in motion that would cause the town to regret sending Jose away and set the fanatics by the ears.
三年后,接二連三的事情開(kāi)始發(fā)生,這使鎮(zhèn)里的人后悔趕走了喬斯,使狂熱者們吵了起來(lái)。

A gang of criminals began to set fire to houses, buildings, and cars whenever they could.

When the police set their minds on capturing this gang, the gang robbed their homes, beat up their children, and kidnapped their wives!

It set a record for most violent crimes in the state! It served them right, Jose's parents thought.

They had long since set aside the belief that Jose was from the devil. After his departure they had seen that the fanatics served two masters their God and their money!

They thought that no Godly people would set foot in a town with a known psychic! And so they had protected their own interests by getting rid of Jose.
他們認(rèn)為有著名的巫師在,善男信女就不會(huì)進(jìn)城。因此就通過(guò)除掉喬斯來(lái)保護(hù)他們自己的利益。
When Jose's parents had set down their positions in the leadership of the group (given to them after Jose left),
當(dāng)喬斯的父母確立了他們?cè)谛〗M里的領(lǐng)導(dǎo)地位之后(喬斯走后他們被選為領(lǐng)導(dǎo)),
they had felt set free from hate! Then they set about convincing others that the fanatics were just that, fanatics!
他們覺(jué)得已經(jīng)擺脫了仇恨!接著他們就開(kāi)始說(shuō)服別人,狂熱者不過(guò)是些狂熱者!
The gang had arrived, unfortunately, before enough people could be convinced! Asked if he knew where Jose was and if Jose would come back to help,
不幸的是,在足夠的人被說(shuō)服之前犯罪團(tuán)伙來(lái)了。當(dāng)別人問(wèn)他是否知道喬斯在哪里、喬斯是否會(huì)回來(lái)相救時(shí),
Jose’s dad just set his jaw and reminded them that he had served asa member of their group since the day Jose had set forth-there was no way that Jose had talked to him in that time!
喬斯的父親只是把下巴一沉,提醒他們從喬斯啟程的那天起他就一直充當(dāng)著他們的一員——喬斯不可能在那個(gè)時(shí)候跟他說(shuō)話。
No one knew where Jose was! But they all wished he would come back-if only to save them from people they realized were worse than him!
沒(méi)人知道喬斯在哪里!但大家都希望他會(huì)回來(lái)——他們已經(jīng)知道那幫人比他壞,要是他能解救他們就好了!
