118.不能沖動(dòng)購(gòu)物
"Now, no ifs and buts. No impulse buying today, okay, kids?"
"好啦，別找借口啦。今天不能有沖動(dòng)性購(gòu)買，好嗎，孩子們？"
Mom said as she tried to imbue her children with an appreciation for self-control. "Okay, mommy!" they all said.
媽媽說(shuō), 她想讓孩子們學(xué)會(huì)重視自我克制。"好的，媽咪！"他們齊聲說(shuō)道。
Then they entered the mall! Mom was ill at ease right away. There were toy stores everywhere.
接著他們進(jìn)了商場(chǎng)！媽媽很快就不安起來(lái)。因?yàn)榈教幎际琴u玩具的。
It was like they were immersed in another world-one of spending money!
好像他們浸沒(méi)在另外一個(gè)世界，一個(gè)花錢的世界！
But she kept going; she had strengthened her own immune system beforehand by looking at their credit card bills.
可她沒(méi)有停下來(lái)，她事先看過(guò)他們的信用卡賬單，所以加強(qiáng)了自身的免疫系統(tǒng)。
Her husband had also imposed as strict of a rule on her as she had on her children: no impulse buying!
丈夫也給她立了很嚴(yán)的規(guī)矩，就像她給孩子們立了很嚴(yán)的規(guī)矩一樣，那就是不能沖動(dòng)購(gòu)物！
The children did great. She had impressed them with not asking for anything.
孩子們表現(xiàn)得很好。她從不要求買什么，這給孩子們留下了印象。
But when mom saw a new dress imported from China she almost lost her control!

Her hand even started moving towards her purse. But then she saw her kids looking at her.

If she wanted to impart to them anything, she had to first live it herself. She walked away.

Her immediate forebears would have been proud! They never went shopping.

Her mother even still knit her own sweaters! But mom was ignorant of those skills, just as her children would be.

They thought society had improved on the old traditions, especially when it came to the quality of clothing.
他們認(rèn)為社會(huì)已經(jīng)改進(jìn)了這些古老的傳統(tǒng)，尤其是關(guān)系到衣服質(zhì)量的時(shí)候。
If only modem society were less impartial to credit cards ...
要是當(dāng)代社會(huì)對(duì)信用卡不那么公正就好了……
Anyhow, as the children were imitative of their mother, she was of them.
無(wú)論如何，正如孩子們會(huì)模仿母親一樣，她也會(huì)模仿他們。
They browsed through the mail, had a bite to eat in the food court and then went home.
他們?cè)谏虉?chǎng)里隨便逛了逛，在美食廣場(chǎng)吃了點(diǎn)東西，然后就回家了。
Dad's mouth was hanging open when they walked in without a bag!
看到他們兩手空空回來(lái)，父親驚得半天合不攏嘴！
