120.The Burglar
The burglar looked in ail directions. Then he weaved in and out between the trees and bushes until he came to the house.
In addition to knowing the layout of the lawn, he also knew in advance where each door, window and room were.
He was, in a word, prepared! He was like that in any case!
Then, in an effort to not make any noise, he slipped off his shoes so that he was just wearing socks.
In a while he would be inside. Jewelry was in abundance! He knew this would be a good haul!
Then the telephone rang, lights came on and the burglar had to wait.
This was, in a sense, the riskiest part of being a burglar.
Now he would have to wait not just for the phone call to be over, but also for the husband to fall back to sleep!
No more getting in and out of this house in a few minutes!
In a way the burglar didn't mind. It was a beautiful evening and he could see all the stars.
He was also prepared in case this might happen; he could always come back tomorrow night.
Thinking about it he decided to leave.
It was much better than waiting and then getting in a terrible mess if the husband was unable to sleep quick enough.
"In any event, be most ready to run away."
Those were the wise words of his tutor, a master burglar. Wise words indeed!
