37.航行記錄
Walter McCullen woke up birght and early.
沃爾特麥卡侖一大早就醒了。
This was the day that he would bring his plan finally into action: he would break the record for sailing across the bay!
這天他將終于要讓他的計劃實現了：他要打破航海海灣的記錄！
He kissed his wife and slipped out to the pier.
他吻別妻子，悄悄來到了橋墩上。
It was a bright and breezy day.
這是一個晴朗而微風吹拂的日子。
The sun brightened his spirits making him feel as if even the sun knew that this was the day Walter would bring an end to that record.
太陽使他神清氣爽，他覺得就連太陽都知道那是沃爾特即將結束那項紀錄的日子。
If he did, then he would finally bring home the bacon his family needed-in the form of enough prize money to last years.
一旦成功了，他將終于能夠滿足養家糊口的要求--他的的獎金足以讓家人生活好幾年。
Walter brought forth the boat out of its shed.
沃爾特從棚里取出船，
Then he placed it in the water and got in.
然后把它放到水里并上了船。
As he sailed away he didn't even see his wife watching in the window.
把船開走的時候他甚至沒有看到妻子在窗戶里觀看。
"If he fails, " she thought to herself, "I'm going to break up with him.
“如果他失敗了，”她暗自想道，“我就準備跟他斷絕關系了；
And if he wins, looking on the bright side, I'll take the money and leave too!"
如果他成功了，看光明的一面，我也會拿著錢走人！”
What a way to bring in the day!
瞧這一天是怎么開始的！
Now further out in the water, Walter thought about what had brought about his obsession with this record.
現在離岸更遠了，沃爾特想是什么導致他對記錄這樣著迷？
It was because it was the only record his other brother still had.
因為那是他哥哥保持的唯一記錄。
It would just brighten up his life to know that he had finally beaten his brother at everything he had ever done!
知道他樣樣都能超過哥哥會使他的生活更加充滿歡樂！
It would also erase all of the bad memories that were brought back each time he got in a boat!
同時他還能抹掉沒每次上船都要想起的所有那些不好的回憶
"Bring the boat forward," the harbormaster said. " Okay. Ready. Go!"
“讓船靠前一點，”港務長說。“好準備， 出發！”
And Walter was off!
沃爾特出發了。
