Twenty Nine Save That House!
第二十九課 那房子不能拆！
When the big old house on Main Street was slated for destruction, Missy Wheeler was the last person people thught would care.
當主街上那座很大的舊房子被選定要拆除時，米西惠勒是人們以為最不在乎的人。
She lived in the perfectly groomed house next door.
她住在隔壁一幢裝修的很漂亮的房子里。
She was supposed to want it torn down.
她應該希望把它拆掉。
Instead, she claimed that the old house was relevant to the history of the town!
可她卻說那做房子與城市的歷史有關。
When she took it upon herself to be responsible for its protection, some neighbors thought she was a little out of line!
當她承擔起責任保護這座房子的責任時，一些鄰居認為她有點兒不對勁！
"Just let the building the torn down, " they thought。"Who wants to live next that old thing?"
"拆了它算了," 他們想。"誰愿意住在那么個破房子旁邊呢？"
But Missy Whether was just being herself.
可是米西惠勒顯得很自然。
And she was onto something.
我倒是有點兒經驗。
She was soon overwhelmed with support from other people to preserve the old home!
很快她就被其他人的支持包圍了，他們要保護這座老房子！
They were glad that someone was sensitive to cultural preservation and they were sick of standing by doing nothing while their history was lost.
他們很高興有人對保護文化這么敏感，他們討厭眼看歷史被丟棄掉卻袖手旁觀。
Missy soon had a team of people ready to take the issue to court if that were the case!
米西很快就聚集了一批人，他們準備把問題提交法庭--如果發生這種情況！
They were even emotionally prepared for a lengthy court battle.
他們甚至從感情上做好了準備，要在法庭上打一場持久仗。
They needn't have become so agitated.
他們其實沒有必要這么激動。
At the first sign of protest, the City Council knew that the decision had been out of order.
一看到有抗議的跡象，市政府就知道他們的決定不合適。
They immediately issue a retraction of the contract to tear down the house.
所以他們趕緊發出了撤銷拆房合同的通知。
When they called the demolishion company to cancel the contract, however, they were surprised to hear that their line was out of service.
但是，當他們打電話給拆放公司取消合同的時候，他們吃驚地發現他們的電話線打不通。
Apparently Missy and others had already called so many times, that the company had disconneted their phones.
很顯然，米西和她那幫人打了很多電話，拆房公司把他們電話掐了。
As everyone came together, all agreed that the house was suitable for restoration.
大家聚到一起時都認為那座房子適合做翻修。
When the demolition company was hired to do the work at a greater fee than they had been offered to destroy the house, even they agreed!
拆房公司被請來做修復工作，給他們的報酬比拆除費還高，因為就連他們也沒了意見。
