習(xí)語翻譯常用的策略主要有：

１．用意義相近的習(xí)語來翻譯：

More haste, less speed. 欲速則不達(dá)。

２．用直譯法： break silence 打破沉默

The policeman found a clue to the burglary.

警察找到了盜竊案的線索。

跑得了和尚跑不了廟。

The monk can run away, but not the monastery.

竹籃打水一場空。

To draw water in a bamboo basket.

３．用意譯法：

Don''t get wise with me, young man.

別對我無禮，小伙子！

But the die was cast, he could not go back.

但事已決定，他不能翻悔。

他把你的話，一五一十，都告訴我了。

He has recounted everything you said in detail to me.

萬一你有個三長兩短，

If anything should happen to you,

４．兼用直譯和意譯：

The captain scratched the beginnings of five o''clock shadow and look away.

上校一邊用手抓著下午五點鐘長出來的絡(luò)腮胡子茬，一邊向遠(yuǎn)處望去。（這句里的 “five o''clock shadow”, 如果直譯為“五點鐘的陰影”，中國讀者一定難以理解，只好一部分直譯，一部分意譯。）

她單身一人，無親無故。

She is all by herself and far from home, without a single relative or friend to help her. （這里把“無親無故”直譯為 ”without a single relative or friend”，然后加上意譯 ”to help her”，使意思更明確。）
