The Yungang Grottoes were carved in the 5th century, and Angkor Wat rose to prominence in the 12th century. These historical relics remind us that even before the Western concept of "globalization" emerged, Datong and Siem Reap have stood at the crossroads of civilizations.
Luo Yang, a researcher at the China Institute for Chinese Overseas Studies, said ancient Angkor was a crossroads of the world. The cultural exchanges made Southeast Asia one of the most culturally diverse regions.
Such fusion permeates daily life. Local units of measure, such as the liang and the dou — echo ancient Chinese terms, represent centuries of cultural and commercial exchange.
Like Siem Reap, Datong served as a crossroads of civilizations. Sun Yu, a professor at Shanxi Datong University, said that the region hosted 16 ethnic groups during the Tang Dynasty (618-907).
Wu Jiao, a scholar from the Yungang Grottoes Research Academy, points to Cave 12 of the Yungang Grottoes as evidence of this. Known as the "Music Cave", it contains carvings of 47 musicians and 44 instruments derived from the civilizations of the ancient Silk Road.
These statues and murals are like "social media posts" of bygone ages — capturing the exchange of civilizations and cultures. In 2019, the Yungang Grottoes and Angkor Wat became sister sites, and four years ago Datong and Siem Reap became sister cities.
The stone treasures embody the essence of the China-Cambodia relationship. This exchange stretches far beyond the confines of ancient relics. Now it extends to all-round cooperation in politics, manufacturing, agriculture, energy, security, and people-to-people exchanges.
