With just over ten minutes to go, elementary and university students were continuing intensive rehearsals. The air above the stage was filled with the sound of instruments and conversation.
Silence fell as Li Haiying took his place on the conductor's podium. As the composer of the Song of the Seven Sons, Li found today's rendition particularly meaningful, despite his numerous past performances. "Performing the Song of the Seven Sons in this venue holds profound significance," he said.
The choral performance was held at Tsinghua University, the alma mater of the song's lyricist Wen Yiduo. Positioned 500 meters from the conductor's podium near the Wenting Pavilion, stands the statue of Wen Yiduo, exuding a quiet poise as though attentively listening.
If he were here today, Wen would perceive a completely different emotion from what he felt when composing the lyric. In the words of Li Haiying, the present feeling is one of "joy".
Li said, "When Wen Yiduo penned this poem, he did it with profound sorrow and indignation. By the time I went to compose music for these lyrics in 1997, Macao's return was within sight. My feelings towards it certainly changed."
Today, a quarter-century after its return to China, Macao has experienced notable revitalization, with a vibrant feeling on its streets. Li Haiying says its lively night scenes resemble "a celestial realm".
Besides joy, the Song of the Seven Sons now resonates with an additional layer of sentiment. "I feel proud," said Wang Xuanhao of the Beijing Cone Orchestra Harmonia Children's Choir.
What makes this performance of the Song of the Seven Sons even more special is the participation of the new torchbearer of the song, Long Chi-lam. She remotely harmonizes with the choir and symphony orchestra at Tsinghua University's Meng Min Wei Concert Hall, adding a unique dimension to the rendition.
In his final speech in 1946, Wen Yiduo passionately proclaimed, "Our dawn is near, yet this is the darkest moment before dawn."
Now, the children, raised in the cradle of peace, resoundingly declare in their clearest voices that the dawn of light has finally arrived.
