It was a long time before anyone spoke.	很長(zhǎng)一段時(shí)間，沒(méi)有人開(kāi)口說(shuō)話(huà)。
Out of the corner of his eye Phouchg could see the sea of tense expectant faces down in the square outside.	佛格的眼角甚至能夠瞟見(jiàn)外面廣場(chǎng)上緊張期待著的人們臉龐的海洋。
"We're going to get lynched aren't we?" he whispered.	“我們會(huì)被暴民們絞死的，是嗎？”他喃喃地說(shuō)道。
"It was a tough assignment," said Deep Thought mildly.	“這是一件艱巨的工作。”深思溫和地說(shuō)。
"Forty-two!" yelled Loonquawl. "Is that all you've got to show for seven and a half million years' work?"	“42！”盧恩克沃爾嚷道，“難道這就是你經(jīng)過(guò)750萬(wàn)年的運(yùn)算后展示給我們的結(jié)果嗎？”
"I checked it very thoroughly," said the computer, "and that quite definitely is the answer. I think the problem, to be quite honest with you, is that you've never actually known what the question is."	“我非常細(xì)致地檢查過(guò)了，”電腦說(shuō)，“這確實(shí)就是那個(gè)答案。我認(rèn)為問(wèn)題出在——老實(shí)說(shuō)吧——你們從來(lái)也沒(méi)有確切地知道這些問(wèn)題本身到底是什么。”
"But it was the Great Question! The Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything!" howled Loonquawl.	“可這確實(shí)是偉大的問(wèn)題啊！關(guān)于生命、宇宙以及一切的終極問(wèn)題。”盧恩克沃爾嚎叫起來(lái)。
"Yes," said Deep Thought with the air of one who suffers fools gladly, "but what actually is it?"	“是的。”深思說(shuō)，帶著一種很享受傻瓜們的騷擾的語(yǔ)氣，“可它確切的內(nèi)容是什么呢”
A slow stupefied silence crept over the men as they stared at the computer and then at each other.	接下來(lái)是一陣茫然的沉默，兩人望著電腦，然后對(duì)望著。
"Well, you know, it's just Everything ... Everything ..." offered Phouchg weakly.	“嗯，你知道的，這是所有的一切……一切……”佛格有氣無(wú)力地說(shuō)。
"Exactly!" said Deep Thought. "So once you do know what the question actually is, you'll know what the answer means."	“正確！”深思說(shuō)，“所以，只要你們確切地知道問(wèn)題到底是什么，你們就能理解這個(gè)答案的意思。”
"Oh terrific," muttered Phouchg flinging aside his notebook and wiping away a tiny tear.	“噢，這太好了。”佛格咕噥著，一隨手將筆記本扔到一邊，揮手擦掉一滴眼淚。
"Look, alright, alright," said Loonquawl, "can you just please tell us the Question?"	“你瞧，好吧，好吧，”盧恩克沃爾說(shuō)，“能請(qǐng)你告訴我們這個(gè)問(wèn)題究竟是什么嗎？”
"The Ultimate Question?"	“這個(gè)終極問(wèn)題？”
"Yes!"	“是的！”
"Of Life, the Universe, and Everything?"	“關(guān)于生命、宇宙以及一切？”
"Yes!"	“是的！”

Chapter 28

"It was a tough assignment," said Deep Thought mildly.

"I checked it very thoroughly," said the computer, "and that quite definitely is the answer. I think the problem, to be quite honest with you, is that you've never actually known what the question is."
"But it was the Great Question! The Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything!" howled Loonquawl.
"Yes," said Deep Thought with the air of one who suffers fools gladly, "but what actually is it?"

"Exactly!" said Deep Thought. "So once you do know what the question actually is, you'll know what the answer means."

"Look, alright, alright," said Loonquawl, "can you just please tell us the Question?"
"The Ultimate Question?"
"Yes!"
"Of Life, the Universe, and Everything?"
"Yes!"
