Drug Lord Escapes Jail Through Mile-Long Tunnel

Mexican police are used to searching for infamous drug baron El Chapo, and once again Joaquin Guzman is on the run after escaping from a maximum security prison. Road blocks are in place and an airport closed as they try to recapture the cartel leader, thought to be worth a billion dollars.

When he was arrested last year, the government were confident that they can keep him locked up, they even rejected an offer from the US to take care of his incarceration, but as the details of this audacious escape are revealed, the government is once again facing embarrassment. He escaped from Altiplano jail through a sophisticated tunnel, 10 meters deep. It stretched for over 1.5 kilometers and surfaced in a nearby house.

Guzman became prominent in the 1980s as the leader of one of Mexico's biggest drug cartels. They shipped cocaine and other drugs around the world. He was arrested in Guatemala in 1993, in 2001 he escaped prison by bribing officials and hiding in a laundry basket, and it was last year that he was recaptured in Mexico. For the government desperate to take control of a country's drug problem, he was a major coup. Organized cartels in the country are responsible for cooking and selling drugs on an industrial scale as filmed by Sky News, it's estimated that 80,000 people have been killed in cartel violence since 2006.

When police captured Guzman in 2014, they also uncovered a series of tunnels between his safe houses, a similar setup for the one built for his escape this weekend. Police said they are questioning 18 people in connection with the breakout, and they'll no doubt face tough questions themselves about how they could let such a powerful and dangerous man escape for a second time.
