Mitchell Palmer was a young lawyer. One day, a neighbor entered his office and asked: "What could I do if another man's dog entered my yard and killed one of my chickens?"
密切爾·伯默先生是個(gè)青年律師。有一天，他的一個(gè)鄰居來(lái)到他的辦公室問(wèn)他：“如果別人的狗跑進(jìn)我的院子并咬死了我的一只雞，我怎么辦？”
Mr. Palmer replied that the damage done could be collected from the owner of the dog.
伯默先生回答道，這損失應(yīng)上狗的主人賠償。
"Well," said the man, "since it was your dog, you might as well pay me the worth of the chicken, about one dollar, Mr. Palmer."
“那好，”那個(gè)人說(shuō)，“那恰是你的狗，伯默先生，你該賠我的雞，大約一美元！”
Mr. Palmer smiled as he handed the man the amount named, and said: "Now, then, as I have paid all that I owe you, don't you think i's only fair you settle up that matter of the little bill you owe me?"
伯默先生微笑著按那個(gè)人要的錢(qián)付給了他，然后說(shuō)：“我欠你的錢(qián)付清了。你不覺(jué)得現(xiàn)在你也該了結(jié)一下你欠我的那筆小數(shù)目了嗎？”
"But", protested the neighbor, "I don't owe you a penny."
那鄰居抗議說(shuō)：“我一分錢(qián)也沒(méi)欠你。”
"Ah," smiled Mr. Palmer, "don't you? Kindly pay me five dollars for the legal advice which I gave you concerning the loss of your chicken."
伯默先生微笑著說(shuō)，“是嗎？我為你損失一只雞的事作了法律咨詢，請(qǐng)你付我五美元。”
