S. Korea warns of surprise DPRK nuclear test

South Korea’s Defense Ministry is warning of a possible "surprise" nuclear test by the DPRK, citing increased activity at the country’s main underground test site.
Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok says a lot of activity has been detected in and around the Punggye-ri test site in northeast DPRK, where the county conducted its third nuclear test in February last year.
Kim declined to elaborate on the specific activities, saying the information is part of confidential intelligence held by South Korea and the U.S.. He also said there’d been a recent verbal warning of a "big event" before April 30th, but he declined to reveal the source of the warning.
South Korea’s defense ministry says it’s launched a special task force with the Joint Chiefs of Staff to step up efforts to monitor and brace for possible DPRK nuclear detonation.
"It’s difficult for us to reveal detailed activities as this information is contained in U.S. and South Korean intelligence reports," Kim said. "We are constantly aware that DPRK has the ability to conduct a sudden nuclear test in a short period of time. And we know that in the past, the DPRK has even faked the build up to a nuclear test to try to fool us."
