U.S. issues global travel warning

The U.S. State Department issues a travel warning -- to the world. It warns Americans that al Qaeda may be planning attacks in August, "particularly in the Middle East and North Africa," according to a statement. It prompted the U.S. to close 21 U.S. embassies and consulates this Sunday, including Afghanistan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, U.S. security sources say there is no single target and that the advisory applies more broadly to Western interests. But travelers at the Capital's largest airport, Washington Dulles International, didn't let the threat get in the way of their destination Friday.

The worldwide warning isn't out of the ordinary. The State Department regularly issues what it calls "Worldwide Caution" warnings to U.S. citizens, alerting them of the general potential danger of attacks around the world. One U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Friday's travel alert was based on more specific information. The last "Worldwide Caution" was issued on February 19.

Election Commission declares Mugabe in Zimbabwe

The election commission declares that Robert Mugabe has been re-elected as Zimbabwe's president, with 61 percent of the vote.If the results hold that will allow the 89-year-old to extend his 33-year rule. But Morgan Tsvangirai, who leads Zimbabwe's Movement for Democratic Change or MDC party does not buy the results.

Tsvangirai, who served as Prime Minister in a fractious unity government under Mugabe, drew 34 percent of the vote.

Panda cub celebrates first birthday

For one-year-old Xiao Liwu it's hard to know where to start. The panda cub was treated to a 3-tiered bamboo cake to celebrate his birthday. And he may be young, but he's also brave, according to San Diego Zoo's senior keeper, Jennifer Becerra.

Created by zoo staff, the treat was flavored with yams, apples and carrots. Xiao Liwu whose name means "little gift", is the sixth giant panda born at the San Diego Zoo.
