語法精講【虛擬語氣】：這是含有讓步狀語從句才復合句。

主句是：She loves that child，讓步狀語從句時：though she says she hates him and wishes they were both dead.。在讓步狀語從句中含有2個有并列連詞and連接的賓語從句。在第二個賓語從句“she said she wishes they were both dead”中的賓語從句“they were both dead”使用了虛擬語氣。

當主句中有“wish”這個表示“希望，愿望”的詞時，后面跟有賓語從句，賓語從句就要使用虛擬語氣。該句子中是“直接引語”，是表示對“現在的情況的虛擬”，因此用的是一般過去式“were dead”。

語法精講【現在分詞】：watching the young mother是現在分詞短語做伴隨狀況狀語。文中是說一個女人在說到苔絲的事情，同時，這個女人在觀望著苔絲。“Say”和“watch”這2個動作再同時發生。
