Obama urges action on debt ceiling 奧巴馬敦促在債務限額上采取行動
US President Barack Obama says the recent deal to avert automatic tax rises and spending cuts - the so-called "fiscal cliff" - does not mean the country's economic problems are over.

In his weekly radio and internet address, Obama says the deal was one step in a broader effort to boost the economy and shrink federal deficits.

Obama said, "For the first time in two decades, we raised taxes on the wealthiest 2% of Americans in a bipartisan way, while preventing a middle-class tax hike that could have thrown our economy back into recession. But all this was just one more step in the broader effort to grow our economy and shrink our deficits. We still need to do more to put Americans back to work while also putting this country on a path to pay down its debt. And our economy can’t afford more protracted showdowns or manufactured crises along the way. Because even as our businesses created 2 million new jobs last year - including 168,000 new jobs last month - the messy brinksmanship in Congress made business owners more uncertain and consumers less confident. "

Government data released on Friday showed the U.S. unemployment rate remained at 7.8 percent in December. This week, lawmakers in the Senate and the House passed legislation that raised tax rates for the wealthiest Americans, while extending tax cuts for the middle classes.

Obama repeated that he would not negotiate on the debt ceiling, and hopes to avoid the 2011 conflict that led to a credit rating downgrade and pushed the country close to default.

Obama said he’s willing to do more on deficit reduction and he hinted that the hike in tax rates for the rich would not be the last tax change of the current term.
