胡適（1891.12.17—1962.2.24），漢族，安徽績溪人。現代著名學者、詩人、歷史家、文學家、哲學家。因提倡文學革命而成為新文化運動的領袖之一。原名嗣穈，學名洪骍，字希疆，后改名胡適，字適之，筆名天風、藏暉等，其中，適與適之之名與字，乃取自當時盛行的達爾文學說“物競天擇適者生存”典故。
胡適深受赫胥黎與約翰·杜威的影響，自稱赫胥黎教他怎樣懷疑，杜威先生教他怎樣思想。因此胡適畢生宣揚自由主義，提倡懷疑主義，并以《新青年》月刊為陣地，宣傳民主、科學才能救中國，畢生倡言“大膽地假設，小心地求證”、“言必有證”的治學方法。

It's all ordinary experience,
都是平常經驗，
All ordinary images.
都是平常影像，
By chance they emerge in a dream,
偶然涌到夢中來，
Turning out infinite new patterns.
變幻出多少新奇花樣！
It's all ordinary feelings,
都是平常情感，
All ordinary words.
都是平常言語，
By chance they encounter a poet,
偶然碰著個詩人，
Turning out infinite new verses.
變幻出多少新奇詩句！
Once intoxicated, one learns the strength of wine,
醉過才知酒濃，
Once smitten, one learns the power of love:
愛過才知情重；
You cannot write my poems
你不能做我的詩，
Just as I cannot dream your dreams.
正如我不能做你的夢。
