沃爾特·惠特曼（Walt Whitman，1819年5月31日－1892年3月26日），生于紐約州長島，他是美國著名詩人、人文主義者，他創造了詩歌的自由體（Free Verse），他當過印刷工、記者、教師和政府職員，主編過好幾份報紙，其中包括《布魯克林鷹報》。 其代表作品是詩集《草葉集》。
1855年，惠特曼自費出版《草葉集》，只印了九百本左右，其中大部分都送給他的朋友。這本薄薄的詩集共收了十二首無題詩另加一篇前言，起初并沒引起多少人注意。然而它終究述是影響了幾代美國詩人。惠特曼創新的自由詩——不押韻腳，不拘音步——以及他現實主義的形象和個人風格都表明他與因循守舊的詩歌斷然決裂。惠特曼一生中都定期擴充和修訂《草葉集》。
