毛澤東（1893年12月26日－1976年9月9日），字潤之（原作詠芝，后改潤芝），筆名子任。湖南湘潭人。中國革命家、戰略家、理論家和詩人，中國共產黨、中國人民解放軍和中華人民共和國的主要締造者和領袖，毛澤東思想的主要創立者。從1949年到1976年，毛澤東是中華人民共和國的最高領導人。他對馬克思列寧主義的發展、軍事理論的貢獻以及對共產黨的理論貢獻被稱為毛澤東思想。毛澤東擔任過的主要職務幾乎全部稱為「主席」，所以被尊稱為毛主席。毛澤東被視為現代世界歷史中最重要的人物之一，《時代》雜志將他評為20世紀最具影響100人之一。
《沁園春·雪》是毛澤東主席的詩詞名篇，創作于1936年2月。詩詞分上下兩闋，上闋描寫北國雪景，展現祖國山河的壯麗；下闋由祖國山河的壯麗而感嘆，并引出英雄人物，縱論歷代英雄人物，抒發詩人偉大的抱負及胸懷。

North country scene:
北國風光，
A hundred leagues locked in ice,
千里冰封，
A thousand leagues of whirling snow.
萬里雪飄。
Both sides of the Great Wall
望長城內外，
One single white immensity.
惟余莽莽；
The Yellow River's swift current
大河上下，
Is stilled from end to end.
頓失滔滔。
The mountains dance like silver snakes
山舞銀蛇，
And the highlands charge like wax-hued elephants,
原馳蠟象，
Vying with heaven in stature.
欲與天公試比高。
On a fine day, the land,
須晴日，
Clad in white, adorned in red,
看紅裝素裹，
Grows more enchanting.
分外妖嬈。
This land so rich in beauty
江山如此多嬌，
Has made countless heroes bow in homage.
引無數英雄競折腰。
But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti
惜秦皇漢武，
Were lacking in literary grace,
略輸文采；
And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu
唐宗宋祖，
Had little poetry in their souls;
稍遜風騷。
And Genghis Khan, Proud Son of Heaven for a day,
一代天驕，成吉思汗，
Knew only shooting eagles, bow outstretched
只識彎弓射大雕。
All are past and gone!
俱往矣，
For truly great men
數風流人物，
Look to this age alone.
還看今朝。
