早在1340 年，有一本題名為《良心的悔恨》（Remorse of Conscience）的散文集中有一句話跟這條成語很接近，這句話是∶

許多宗教導師都把牛放在犁后。Many religious teachers set the plough before the oxen.

1520年羅伯特．懷丁頓在《庸俗》(Vulgarian)一書中說∶

“那位先生把車放在馬前，要模仿而不要訓誨。”

1589年普坦漢姆在其著作《英詩技巧》（Arte of English Poets）中提到把“車在馬前”(the cart before the horse)

作為成語而意指“本末倒置”。

You will put the cart before the horse if you emphasize the method at the expense of content.
