一.figure out:vt.算出, 想出, 解決

【語法用法】
figure out和figure up意思相近，在美國英語中解釋為“計算”或“估計”。
They have figured out(up) how much would be required.
figure on在美國英語中則解釋為“估計到”或“指望”。
【例句用法】
Mahatma Gandhi was both a political and a religious figure in Indian history.
甘地在印度歷史上是政治和宗教要人。
They figured it was better to stay where they were.
他們斷定還是呆在原地好。
二.connect to:連接, 相連
These terminals are connected to our mainframe computer.
這些終端設備都和我們的計算機主機相連。
connect:v.連接, 接通, 聯系
【詞義辨析】
join, combine, unite, connect, link, attach, couple, associate, relate
這些動詞均有“連接、結合、聯合”之意。
join側重把原來不相連接的物緊密地連接在一起，但仍可再分開。也指把分散的人或幾個部分的人聯合起來，或加入到某團體中去。
combine指兩個或兩個以上的人或物結合在一起。
unite指聯合、團結、結合在一起，構成一個整體。
connect指兩事物在某一點上相連接，但彼此又保持獨立。
link指連環式的連接，或用接合物或其它方式連接，還可指一事物與另一事物的聯系或關系。
attach指把局部連接在整體上，小的接在大的上面，活動的接在固定的上面。
couple專指連接兩件東西，或把事物成對進行連接。
associate指人與人友好和平、平等地聯合在一起；用于物時，指兩事物因歷史或其它原因，很自然被人們聯系在一起，即產生聯想。
relate指人與人有親戚或婚煙關系；也指人或物之間尚存的實際或假想的聯系。
【例句用法】
The plumber connected up all the pipes and turned on the tap.
管子工連接上所有管子，然后打開了水龍頭。
The police are connecting this incident with last week's terrorist bombing.
警方認為這次事件和上周的恐怖分子爆炸事件有關。
三.lose:vt.丟失, 失敗, 削減, 喪生, 看不到, 虧損, 迷失 vi.失敗, 經受損失, 走慢
【語法用法】
lose no time in ...一般表示“趕快去……”，有時也表示“不白費時間在……”。在容易產生歧義的場合應避免使用。注意in有時被省略。
I lost no time (in) following up the idea.
我要趕緊跟進這個想法。
lost to...通常作“失去了……”解，不過應在容易被誤會的場合避免使用。
The opportunity was lost to him.
他失去了機會。
lose后可跟雙賓語。
His laziness lost him his job.
他的懶惰使他失去了職位。
lose是短暫動詞，所以不可用于完成時態。
He has lost his pen for a week.
He lost his pen a week ago.
It is a week since he lost his pen.
第一句的表達方式是錯誤的，后面兩句的表達方式是正確的。
lose作“迷路”意時為及物動詞，后面須跟賓語，如lose one's way。
【錯句舉例與錯句分析】
錯句: Traditional open fires are too often inefficient and draughty, losing most of their heat into the surrounding masonry up the chimney.
訂正: Traditional open fires are too often inefficient and draughty, wastefully directing most of their heat into the surrounding masonry up the chimney.
翻譯: 傳統的明火經常過于通風效率低下，大部分的熱量都散發到周圍的水泥磚石建筑之中白白浪費。
分析: 失去的東西意味著無法再找回，可以說火失去熱度，但不能說火失熱給水泥磚石結構。
【詞義辨析】
lose, miss, misplace
這些動詞均有“丟失、遺失”之意。
lose最普通用詞，側重遺失了，難以找回來。
miss著重發覺某人或某物不見的瞬間，也可作思念解。
misplace指反映東西放錯或故意放錯地方。
