The Independent Writing Topics

The following is a list of the actual Independent Writing topics that were eligible for use on former versions of the TOEFL test.You will see topics very similar to these on the TOEFL iBT. Whatever the topic,you will be askedto give your opinion and to support your opinion with specific reasons and examples. It does not matter whetheryou agree or disagree with the topic; theraters aretrained to accept all varieties of opinions.Whatmatters arethe skills discussed in the previous section: your abilityto respond directly to the question, to take a clear position, and to write anessay characterized by good organization, proper use of supporting examples,sentence variety, and correct sentence structures.None of the topics requires specialized knowledge.Most topics are general and are based on the common experience of people ingeneral and students in particular. What should you do with this list oftopics? To prepare for the Writing section of TOEFL iBT, you should choosetopics from the list andpractice writing essays inresponse. Make sure you time yourself, taking 30 seconds to read thequestion, plan your work, and write your essay. After completing the essay,read it over and compare it with the scoring guide. Or better yet, have afriend or teacher evaluate the essay against the scoring criteria and give youfeedback.

Topic 1 Why go to university?

University is no longer（不再是）afresh word to people nowadays. Since the beginning of this century, more andmore youngsters choose to enter university after they have completed the studyin high schools rather than to join the army or become an apprentice（學徒）.Therefore, it is kind of interesting to find out the reasonbehind.（開頭簡述大學的現狀，說明上大學是一種社會驅使，同時通過最后一句引出下文尋找原因）

First of all, students can only learnfundamental（基本的）knowledge during high school while they are able to focus on their owninterested majors in universities. This period is the key to knowledgeaccumulation, which will contribute a lot to the future of an individual.Moreover, university is no doubt the symbol of high education. It offers morethan pure knowledge. A degree from a university gives people certain identitythat makes them stand out（突顯，引人注目）among their competitors. It can be seenfrom the fact that most of the international companies will only hire those whohave at least a Bachelor's degree.（論述第一段提出了上大學的重要性，不僅是積累知識的關鍵時期，而且也是高等教育的一個象征，能讓學生變得更有競爭力。注意文中的連接詞Firstof all, Moreover..;一些靈活變換的句式，如it can be seen from the fact that;以及代詞的使用）

Sincere dreams（天真的夢想）mightalso be the reason for university or college. For instance, in the 60s and 70s,people in China experienced hard times. Many of them had to give up advanced education and take up the burdens of life at their early age. Now, as（當作）theybecame parents or even grandparents, their dream for university education had nodoubt realized by their younger family members. Those young people, asreported, often study very hard in order to fulfill（實現）theexpectations of two generations.（本段中的一個很大的特點就是插入語用的非常靈活【注：兩逗號之間的內容刪除不影響句子結構即為插入語】；此段主要在陳述上大學的另一個主要原因是長輩當年沒有上成大學，造成的對大學的向往以及對后代的期待綜合在一起的原因）

There is no doubt that university can bethe turning point of one's future, because higher education will provide peoplewith not only knowledge prepared for their careers, but also the fulfillment of their life goals. Meanwhile, the society has improved its strength to sponsor highereducation. Compared with the past, people now attend universities also because they are able to secure（獲得）various scholarships and supports from different channels. A very good example is that many Chinese students are nowstudying in the U. S. Their incentive（即motivation動機）for application should be attributed to not only to their own performance but alsothe comprehensive education frameworks in the U. S.（There’sno doubt that翻譯為毫無疑問的是，這個句式很多時候也用在讓步段的開頭；beattributed to解釋為歸因于，有causedby的意思；我們可以看到本段有notonly…but also句式，compared比較句式,表語從句。本段從之前講到的獲得知識，有益于工作，到上升到人生目標這一更高層面）

Broadly speaking, people who study inuniversities have their hopes: to fulfill themselves. At the same time, our society generously provides such an environment for people to achieve such goals.Therefore, when we see more and more fresh smiles on the campus of universities, let us just wish them a promising future.（Broadly speaking,可以替換成generally speaking, 相關的還有frankly speaking, personally speaking,請大家揀有用的copy到自己的作文上，活用小詞可以擺脫死板的作文格式，讓考官看著舒服；我們可以看到全文相同的詞用的不多，給大家一個小tips就是如果你想用同一個詞或是考試時寫不出同義詞的時候，你可以把一個詞換成各種形式比如fulfill-fulfillment-fulfills，托福系統檢查你的作文的時候是不看你這三個詞長得是否相似的，只要不一樣就不會被扣分！最后一定要給出一個明確的personal idea，自己同意還是不同意題中觀點，這個非常重要！模棱兩可有可能會被視為跑題！）
