Best conversation starters with strangers in social settings:
Ice breakers:
Avoid awkward silence, non-starters and dicey topics:
Hi, I don’t think we’ve met yet. I’m [Your Name]. What’s your name? 。
How do you know the host?
Are you here by yourself?
Did you come with anyone?
Have you tried any of the food or drinks here?
Anything you’d recommend? What's good?
Nice music right? What kind of music do you like listening to?
Thank you for organising such a wonderful party/gathering:
I really love what you’ve done with your home. Where did you get the design inspiration?
I love your outfit! Can I ask where you got it?
I was admiring your jewelry/accessory. It’s so unique. Is there a story behind it?
I love your hairstyle. Where do you get your hair done?
Have you seen …?
Have you seen any good movies or TV shows lately?
Do you watch sports? Do you follow any sports? Do you watch the NBA? Which team do you follow?)
What kind of work do you do? / What’s your field? 你是做哪一行的?(What’s your job?
What is it like?
Are you very busy this time of the year?
I’ve always wanted to know more about your field.
Show some curiosity and interest, ask some simple questions to show respect:
Have you been to any similar events recently?
Do you often attend events like this?
In social and professional networking settings, it’s ok to keep it short and move on and talk to other people:
It was great talking to you. Enjoy the rest of the evening/event:
It was great meeting you. Let’s circle the room and mingle some more: 很高興認識你。
