To break up means to to end up a partnership of some kind, often a romantic relationship. 譯為：分手，結束婚姻或者戀情。表示和某人分手，在短語的后面用上介詞with，即：break up with someone。此外，注意break的過去式是broke，過去分詞是broken。這個短語變異為break-up，這時候就是名詞了。

我們通過幾個例句來熟悉它的意思和用法：

例句1：I was so sad to hear of Mara and John's breakup—I thought those two would be together forever.（聽到Mara和John分手，我萬分傷心，我以為他們會永遠在一起。）

解析：hear of是動詞短語，意思是“聽說，得知，獲悉”。例如：I was shocked to hear of his poor death.（聽到他慘遭不幸的噩耗, 我十分震驚。）I am much surprised to hear of his failure.（我聽到他失敗的事感到吃驚。）

例句2：Melissa and Tom haven't been happy together for years. So yesterday, they finally broke up. （Melissa和Tom鬧別扭已經多年了，昨天，他們終于分手了。）

解析: for years是個介詞短語，意思是“多年，好幾年”。例如：I have subscribed to that magazine for years.（我訂閱那種雜志已好幾年了。）
