Feifei: 大家好!歡迎收聽《地道英語》。我是馮菲菲。
William: Guten tag! Ich heisse Wilhelm Kremer. 您好,我叫威廉·克萊默。
Feifei: Eh? 你怎么說起德語了,William? 呃?
William: Ah, sorry Feifei. It's because I've just got back from a long holiday in Germany. 抱歉啊,菲菲。這是因為我剛從德國度假回來。
Feifei: Ah, did you have a nice time? 啊,你過得愉快嗎?
William: I did indeed but it was quite full-on, what with all the walking and cycling and beer drinking. I didn't have much time to just, you know, just relax and read my book. 過得還不錯,散步、騎腳踏車、喝酒什么的,但是就是行程有些緊緊。我沒能完全地放松,你知道的,就是放松和讀書。
Feifei: What was that phrase you just used, William? You said your holiday was quite... something? 威廉,你剛剛用了個什么短語?你說你的假期十分的怎么樣來著?
William: It was quite full-on. My holiday was full-on because I didn't have time to relax. 十分緊湊。我的假期緊湊是因為我沒有足夠的時間放松。
Feifei: So full-on means busy? 所以說這個短語是忙碌的意思?
William: No, no, not quite. It's actually quite a vague phrase. 不是,確切說不完全是。這個短語的意思沒那么具體。
Feifei: Vague 比較模糊的。
William: But because it's vague it's quite useful. Full-on can mean busy but it can also mean, for example, upsetting or emotional. Basically, if something is intense it can be described as full-on.
Feifei: 通常在使用這個短語的時候,我們想說明一件事情使人非常緊張,或者這件事情非常費力;尤其當這件事情本身很費體力,搞得你精疲力盡的。我覺得咱們得來聽些例句。
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A: How was the training? 你的培訓怎么樣了?
B: It was really great but hard work. It started at 8am and finished at 6 with only half an hour for lunch, so it was pretty full-on. 很好,但是很辛苦。培訓從早八點到晚六點,中間只有半個小時的休息時間,所以時間真的很緊。
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A: Have you seen that new war film? 你看過那部新的戰爭片嗎?
B: No, not yet. 不,還沒有。
A: It's brilliant but it's really full-on. 很精彩,就是信息量太大了,一時接受不了。
B: Do you mean in terms of the violence? 你是說暴力部分嗎?
A: Yeah and also it's quite upsetting. I wasn't quite ready for that! 是的啊,也會讓人心煩意亂的。我還沒有完全準備好看那些畫面。
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Feifei: 第一個對話中,說話雙方在討論一個時間安排非常緊湊的培訓課程。第二個對話中說話雙方在討論一個非常令人不安的戰爭影片。因為短語 full-on 要表達的意思比較模糊,所以在第二個對話中,說話一方為了確認他對這個短語的理解是正確的,和另一方核實了自己的理解。
William: Yes. And there is another usage of this phrase too. It can refer to something that is proper or complete or authentic. 是的。這還有一個這個詞組的其他用法。這個可以指某些東西是合適的,或者完全的或者純正的。
Feifei: Authentic 純正的。
William: Let's listen to this example. 看這個事例。
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A: Have you ever been to a full-on Italian wedding? 你參加過純正的意大利婚禮嗎?
B: No... 沒有……
A: It's amazing. There is just so much food! 很棒!有很多的食物供大家分享。
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Feifei: 在這個例子中,說話的一方在談論一個 full-on 意大利婚禮,這里 full-on 的意思是地道的,純正的。也就是說這個婚禮是地地道道傳統的意大利婚禮。
William: Have you heard this phrase much, this phrase full-on, since you moved to the UK, Feifei? 菲菲,自從你去了英國,你經常能用到這個短語嗎?
Feifei: Yes, I have actually. 是的,我常能用到。
William: Is it something that your friends maybe use often? 這是你的朋友常用的嗎?
Feifei: Yes, my friends use it quite a lot and I use it. 是的,我的朋友們常用,我也是。
William: OK. Well we don't want this edition of Authentic Real English to be too full-on for our listeners so let's end it there. 好的。不過我們可不想讓這一期的地道英語節目讓聽眾聽得精神緊張。今天就到這吧。
