Neil: Oh, Feifei, you're right. I feel terrible. I went to a leaving do last night and I drank too much beer… and wine…
Feifei你說(shuō)得對(duì)，我感覺(jué)糟糕極了。我昨晚參加了一個(gè)歡送會(huì)，我喝了太多的啤酒和白酒。

Feifei: 原來(lái)Neil 不舒服是因?yàn)樽蛲砗榷嗔?。A leaving do? Do?

Neil: Yes, a leaving do. A colleague has got a job at another company and had a party to celebrate his last day.
以為同事在另家公司找到了份工作，他舉辦了個(gè)晚會(huì)來(lái)慶祝在公司工作的最后一天。

Feifei: So it was a party?
那是一個(gè)聚會(huì)？

Neil: Yes, yes, that's what I said. It was a leaving do.
那正是我所說(shuō)的，那是一個(gè)聚會(huì)。

Feifei: Right, so 'do' is a noun and it means party?
do 是一個(gè)名詞，意思是“聚會(huì)”。

Neil: Yes, yes, that's right, yes. It's mainly used in British English. Urgh.

Feifei: 在英式英語(yǔ)中，當(dāng)我們把單詞 do 做名詞使用的時(shí)候有聚會(huì)、社交活動(dòng)的意思。

A: Did you enjoy Mary's wedding?

Neil: Yes, you'll hear it all the time: especially in certain phrases.

Feifei: Like what?

Neil: Well, a leaving do.

Neil: And a bit of a do – we're having a bit of a do.
