與西方國家相比，中國成立博物館的時間要晚得多，而且在過去，中國博物館建設發展的速度是比較慢的。

中國的第一家公共博物館是南通博物館，該館建立于1905年，位于現在華東地區江蘇省的南通市。

1949年11月，中國文化部成立了文化遺產管理局，開始對國內21家博物館實施管理。此后，在全國各地陸續成立了各級博物館管理機構。

尤其是自1978年改革開放以來，隨著國家總體實力的增強，中國的博物館建設得到了迅猛的發展。

Compared with Western countries, China set out much later to build its museums, and the development of museums in the country was slow in the past.

The first public museum of the country, Nantong Museum, was founded in Nantong, a city of east China's Jiangsu Province, in 1905.

In November 1949, China's Ministry of Culture established the Cultural Relics Administrative Bureau, which began management of the 21 museums in the country. Since then, museum administrative authorities at different levels have been gradually established throughout the country.

Especially after the start of the reform and opening up in 1978, with the improvement of China's overall national strength, Chinese museums have witnessed a more rapid development/ begun developing more rapidly.
