Ambassador Xie Feng Deliver Remarks to Chinese and U.S. Media
謝鋒大使向中美媒體發表講話
On the evening of May 23 EST, the new Chinese Ambassador to the United States of America Xie Feng arrived at Washington, D.C. and spoke to Chinese and U.S. media. Here is the full text of Ambassador Xie's remarks:
美東時間5月23日晚，中國新任駐美大使謝鋒抵達華盛頓，在中國駐美使館向中美媒體發表講話。全文如下：
I am greatly honored to be appointed by President Xi Jinping as the 12th Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to the United States of America.
我很榮幸受習近平主席委派，出任中華人民共和國駐美利堅合眾國第十二任特命全權大使。
As a representative of the Chinese people, I have come here to safeguard the interests of China, and I take this as my sacred responsibility. As an envoy of the Chinese people, I have come here to enhance China-U.S. exchanges and cooperation, and I take this as my important mission. I started working on China-U.S. relations three decades ago. Thirty years later today, I still believe that a sound and stable China-U.S. relationship is in the interest of both countries. It is also a shared expectation of the international community and a major contribution to world peace and prosperity.
我是中國人民的代表，為了捍衛中國利益而來，這是我的神圣職責。我是中國人民的使者，為了增進中美交流合作而來，這是我的重要使命。30年前，我開始參與中美關系。30年后的今天，我依然相信，一個健康穩定的中美關系，符合兩國共同利益，是國際社會的共同期盼，也是對世界和平與繁榮作出的重大貢獻。
Obviously, there are profound differences between the two countries, and the relationship is faced with serious difficulties and challenges. Then this relationship has gone through many twists and turns in the past half century, yet it has always been able to move ahead. The relationship is too important for us to let it fail. Neither side can change or replace the other. Working together, both will come out as winners; fighting each other, both will lose, and the world will be hurt as well. Whether China and the United States can manage the relationship properly is consequential to the future of our two countries and our planet. The world is watching us.
毋庸諱言，當前中美存在深刻分歧，兩國關系遭遇嚴重困難，面臨嚴峻挑戰。回顧過去半個多世紀，中美關系就是一部歷經風雨但不斷克難前行的歷史。今天的中美關系已經大到不能倒，雙方誰也不可能改變誰，誰也不可能取代誰。合則兩利，斗則俱傷而且會讓全世界遭殃。中美能否處理好彼此關系，將決定兩國的明天和世界的未來。全世界都在看著我們。
The China-U.S. relationship has once again come to a historical crossroads. My appointment at such a critical moment means to me not only honor, but also enormous responsibilities. Both China and the United States are great countries, and both Chinese and Americans are great peoples. We should keep pace with the trend of the times and reject Cold War mentality and zero-sum game, and open our heart and move forward in the same direction. We should take concrete actions to deliver on the common understandings between President Xi Jinping and President Joe Biden, and explore the right way to get along with each other in the new era. We should uphold the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation. We should make the two peoples feel assured and set the world at ease.
中美關系再次站在歷史十字路口。在這樣一個關鍵時刻出任中國駐美大使，我深感使命光榮但責任重大。中美都是偉大的國家，中美人民都是偉大的人民。我們應該順應時代潮流，摒棄冷戰思維和零和博弈，敞開胸襟，相向而行，以實際行動落實習近平主席和拜登總統達成的重要共識，探索新時期中美正確相處之道，相互尊重，和平共處，合作共贏，讓兩國人民放心，讓國際社會安心。
Long and arduous as the journey is, we will get to the destination as long as we take real steps. My colleagues and I will keep in mind the instructions of President Xi Jinping, carry out our duties and responsibilities and live up to our mission with diligence and fortitude.
道阻且長，行則將至。我和我的同事們將牢記習近平主席的囑托，迎難而上，埋頭苦干，擔當作為，不辱使命。
