Part B
Directions: In this part of the test, you will hear 2 passages in Chinese. After you have heard each sentence or paragraph, interpret it into English. Start interpreting at the signal...and stop it at the signal...You may take notes while you are listening. Remember you will hear the passages only once. Now, let us begin Part B with the first passage.
Passage 1:
世界要和平，國家要發展，社會要進步，這是當今世界不可阻擋的時代潮流。
本段的三個“要”都可簡化意為need/want，前者突出“必需”之意，后者強調“愿望”。如果考慮措辭的多樣化，也可使用aspire/yearn/hunger/long for。“不可阻擋的”可譯作irresistible/unstoppable。
中國人民和世界各國人民一樣，都不愿看到再發生新的動亂，都渴望世界持久和平，渴望世界共同發展。
“A與B一樣，都/都不”的結構可譯作Like B, A…或A, like B, …。
中國已進入全面建設小康社會、加快社會主義現代化建設的新階段。發展中的中國需要和平和安全的國際環境。
“進入…的階段”可譯作enter the phase/stage of…?！叭娼ㄔO小康社會”的說法在中高級口譯中出現的頻率極高，但仍有許多考生不熟悉具體譯法?！叭妗背Ｗg作“in an all-round way”，如“德、智、體全面發展”可譯作develop in an all-round way, specifically, morally, intellectually and physically；形容詞all-round意為“多方面的；全能的”，如superb all-round quality of life（一流的全方位生活質量），an all-round player（一個全能/全面的運動員）。
我希望世界各國人民都能理解，中國的發展將對世界和平做出更大貢獻。中國將始終不渝地走和平發展的道路。
“走…的道路”可譯作follow the road of…?！笆钢静挥宓亍笨勺g作unremittingly/unswervingly/steadfastly等。

The world needs peace, nations long for development and society aspires for progress. These are the irresistible trends of our times in the world today.
The Chinese people, like the people of all other countries, do not want to see any new turbulence in any region of the world, but yearn for lasting peace, as well as common development in the world.
China has entered the new phase of development of building a well-off society in an all-round way and speeding up socialist modernization. China, in the process of her development, needs a peaceful and secure international environment.
I hope that all people of the world understand China’s development will make even greater contributions to world peace. China steadfastly follows a road of peaceful development.
Passage 2:
許多西方朋友都有這樣的感覺：改革開放以來，中國人民齊心協力，在開展物質建設的同時，不忘文化的繼承與發展。
“齊心協力”可譯作coordinate one’s efforts to或join hands to或make joint efforts to等。“不忘”可譯為keep…in mind或keep (it) in mind that…。
盡管東西方文化存在很大的差異，但是只有尊重和理解對方的文化，我們才能客觀、公正地介紹那個社會。
“盡管…，但是…”結構可譯作Although…, ….或Despite…, …。前者使用了從屬連詞although，although需接主謂結構，這與漢語習慣相一致。但是如果使用后者，即despite…結構，必須注意despite是介詞，需接名詞結構。所以第一句前半段既可譯作Although there are disparities/great differences between eastern and western cultures，也可譯作Despite the disparities/great differences between eastern and western cultures。
我們也將積極地向世界介紹中國文化，使中國文化走向世界，使中國成為文化大國和強國。
“使…走向世界”宜意譯成make…go global，即“使…具有全球性”。go此處是系動詞，像be，become，grow，turn，sound，look一樣后接形容詞，表達“變為”之意。如Her face went red when she was praised (她受到表揚時臉騰地紅了)；The milk has gone sour (這牛奶餿了)；The speaker’s mind went blank when he found so many people watching him (講話的人見到這么多人看著他腦子變得一片空白)。
我們非常歡迎世界各地的朋友們，來中國走走看看，感受一個充滿活力的文化大國， 這叫“百聞不如一見”。
“感受一個充滿活力的文化大國”實際意為“感受一個文化大國的巨大活力”，故可譯作experience the dynamism/vigor and vitality of a big, cultural country?！鞍俾劜蝗缫灰姟币痪涫鞘熳R的成語，本應直接給出，但眾多考生竟對此不知，譯文也五花八門。就算忘記Seeing is believing這一對應的說法，也可直譯其為To hear it 100 times is not as good as to see it just for once或To see it just for once is better than to hear it 100 times。
?。▍⒖即鸢福?br />Many western friends have the feeling that since the implementation of the reform and opening-up policy, Chinese people have made joint efforts to inherit and develop ethical and cultural undertakings while developing material construction.
Although there are disparities between eastern and western cultures, we can introduce that society objectively and fairly as long as we respect and understand those cultures.
We will actively introduce Chinese cultures to the rest of the world and make the Chinese cultures go global so as to build China into a big and powerful cultural country.
