A biblical idiom is often an expression that underlines the moral of a story and to gives the audiences an picture to help them understand the story better.

《圣經(jīng)》中的習(xí)語是這樣一種表達,它常常需要利用這些習(xí)語來強調(diào)某一故事的寓意,給聽眾或讀者一個意象,以幫助受眾更好地理解這個故事。
One famous example of this is "feet of clay".
一個著名的例子就是“feet of clay”(泥足)。
This idiom comes from a story in the Bible.
這條習(xí)語就出自《圣經(jīng)》里的一則故事。
There was a king who saw a statue of a strong man in a dream.
一國王在夢里見到了一個強壯男人的雕像。
The statue had a head and throat of gold, breast and arms of silver, legs of iron, and ankles and bare feet made of iron and clay.
雕像的頭和咽喉是金的,胸臂是銀的,腿是鐵的,腳踝和腳跟是鐵和泥的。
In the dream, a stone flew at the statue and struck it on the feet. In one swift move, the feet and the entire statue were broken.
夢里飛來一塊石頭,砸到了雕像的腳上,頓時砸碎了泥腳,整個人也隨之瓦解。
Today, we use this idiom to mean that there is a hidden weakness in somebody whom we admire or respect.
如今,我們用這一習(xí)語來表示我們所崇拜或尊敬的人也有不為人知的弱點。
Another common idiom from the Bible is 'see the handwriting on the wall'.
另一個經(jīng)常用的來自《圣經(jīng)》的習(xí)語是‘see the handwriting on the wall’。
This idiom comes from a story about a young and bad king who has having a party with his friends.
這個習(xí)語來自于一個關(guān)于年輕的壞國王和開辦聚會的故事。
While they were having fun and drinking wine at their party, a huge hand appeared and wrote a message on the wall, telling the king and his friends that they were being judged.
當(dāng)他們在聚會上喝著酒,玩的正開心的時候,一個大手出現(xiàn)了并在墻上寫下了一個信息,告訴國王和他的朋友他們被審判了。
That very night, the kingdom was destroyed by the army of another country.
那個晚上,這個王國被其他國家的軍隊摧毀了。
'See the handwriting on the wall', then, means to see signs that disaster is coming.
之后,‘see the handwriting on the wall’被譽為看到災(zāi)難將來的標(biāo)志。
Some biblical idioms use animals, such as "kill the fatted calf"', which means to have a large celebration.
一些圣經(jīng)習(xí)語使用動物,例如“kill the fatted calf”(宰殺肥牛)則意指熱烈慶祝。
It comes from a story where a son left home to waste all of his time and money in amusing himself.
此語出自一則故事,講述一個兒子離開家,在外過著奢靡蹉跎的生活。
After spending every penny of his money and being reduced to hiring himself out to feed pigs, he realized that he had been a fool and went home.
在花光每一分錢之后,他淪落到為人打工,替別人養(yǎng)豬。他意識到自己是多么愚蠢,于是回家。
In honour of his return, his father killed and cooked a calf so that they could have a feast.
為了慶祝他的歸來,他的父親宰殺了一頭肥牛來熱情款待。
