The Story of Atlanta
亞特蘭大的故事
Atlanta was a Greek princess.
亞特蘭大是一個(gè)希臘公主。
She was very beautiful and could run faster than any man in Greece.
她很漂亮并且可以跑得比希臘的任何一個(gè)男人都快。
But she was not allowed to run and win glory for herself in the Olympic Games.
不過(guò)她不被允許在奧運(yùn)會(huì)上跑步去為她自己贏得榮譽(yù)。
She was so angry that she said to her father that she would not marry anyone who could not run faster than her.
她很生氣，因此她跟她父親說(shuō)她不會(huì)嫁任何跑不過(guò)她的男人。
Her father said that she must marry, so Atlanta made a bargain with him.
她父親說(shuō)她必須要嫁，所以亞特蘭大與她父親定下一個(gè)條件。
She said to him, "These are my rules.
她對(duì)她父親說(shuō)，“這是我的原則。
When a man says he wants to marry me, I will run against him.
如果有男人說(shuō)想要娶我，我會(huì)跟他賽跑。
If he cannot run as fast as me, he will be killed. No one will be pardoned."
如果他跑不贏我，他會(huì)被殺。沒(méi)有人能被例外。”
Many kings and princes wanted to marry Atlanta, but when they heard of rules they knew it was hopeless.
很多國(guó)王和王子想要娶亞特蘭大，不過(guò)當(dāng)他們聽(tīng)到這個(gè)規(guī)定的時(shí)候他們就知道自己沒(méi)希望了。
So many of them sadly went home, but others stayed to run the race.
所以他們當(dāng)中的很多人都傷心地回家了，不過(guò)其他的人都留著去賽跑。
There was a man called Hippomenes who was amazed when he heard of Atlanta's rules, "Why are these men so foolish?" he thought.
一個(gè)叫做希波墨涅斯的男人聽(tīng)到亞特蘭大的消息后感到非常驚奇，他想，“為什么這些男的都這么愚蠢呢？”
"Why will they let themselves be killed because they cannot run as fast as this princess?"
“為什么他們會(huì)因?yàn)榕懿贿^(guò)這個(gè)公主而讓自己被殺呢？”
However, when she saw Atlanta come out of her house to run, Hippomenes changed his mind.
然而，當(dāng)他看到亞特蘭大從她的房子出來(lái)跑步的時(shí)候，希波墨涅斯改變了他的心意。
"I will marry Atlanta-or die!" he said.
他說(shuō)，“我會(huì)娶亞特蘭大或者死去！”
The race started and although the man ran very fast, Atlanta ran faster.
賽跑開(kāi)始的時(shí)候雖然男人們都跑得很快，但是亞特蘭大總是會(huì)更快。
As Hippomenes watched he thought, "How can I run as fast as Atlanta?"
希波墨涅斯邊看邊想，“我要怎樣才能贏過(guò)亞特蘭大呢？”
He went to ask the Greek Goddess of Love for help.
他去向希臘的愛(ài)神求助。
She promised to help him and gave him three golden apples.
愛(ài)神答應(yīng)幫他并給了他三個(gè)金蘋(píng)果。
She said," Throw an apple in front of Atlanta when she is running past.
她說(shuō)，“在亞特蘭大跑過(guò)你的時(shí)候扔一個(gè)在亞特蘭大面前。
When she stops to pick it up, you will be able to run past her and win."
當(dāng)亞特蘭大停下來(lái)去撿蘋(píng)果的時(shí)候，你就可以跑過(guò)她并贏得比賽。”
Hippomenes took the apples and went to the King.
希波墨涅斯拿著蘋(píng)果并跑去找國(guó)王。
He said," I want to marry Atlanta ."
他說(shuō)，“我想娶亞特蘭大。”
The King was sad to see another man die, but Hippomenes said, " I will marry her-or die!"
國(guó)王傷心地看著又一個(gè)男人要死，不過(guò)希波墨涅斯說(shuō)，“我會(huì)娶她或者死去！”
So the race began.
然后賽跑開(kāi)始了。
