Still, people say, “Every dog has its day.” This means that every person enjoys a successful period during his life. To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet some people say that “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” They believe that older people do not like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things.
人們還說:“Every dog has its day（人人都有走運的時候）。”這句話是說，每個人一生中都會有成功的時候。為了成功，人們常常不得不學習新的技能。然而，有人說:“you can’t teach an old dog new tricks（老狗學不會新把戲）”，他們認為年長的人不喜歡學習新事物，不愿改變他們做事的方式。
Some people are compared to dogs in bad ways. People who are unkind or uncaring can be described as “meaner than a junkyard dog.” Junkyard dogs live in places where people throw away things they do not want. Mean dogs are often used to guard this property. They bark at or attack people who try to enter the property. However, sometimes a person who appears to be mean and threatening is really not so bad, so we also say, “His bark is worse than his bite.”
