"I think you need to do it," I told him. "You're strong, you're brave, I love you."

"Okay, I'm going to put the phone down, I'm going to leave it here, and I'm going to come right back to it," Jer said. I handed the phone to my dad, ran into the bathroom, and gagged over the sink.
"好，我這就把話筒擱下離開這兒，我會馬上回來再拿起它的，"杰爾說。我把話筒遞給父親，跑進盥洗室，在水池上嘔吐起來。
When my father put the phone to his ear, he heard nothing on the line for two or three minutes. Then he heard screams off in the background. And he thought, They're doing it. It was bound to be noisy. Perhaps a minute and a half later, there was another set of screams, muffled, like people on a roller coaster. Then silence.
我父親把話筒放到耳邊，有兩三分鐘光景什么都聽不到。而后他聽到隱隱約約的尖叫聲。他想，他們正干上了。這必然會引起喧鬧。隔了約莫一分半鐘，又傳來一陣低沉的尖叫聲，就像人們坐過山車時發出的叫聲那樣。隨后便沉寂了下來。
I sat on the living room couch and all my energy seemed to have deserted me. After a while, I got up and headed for the kitchen and almost collided with my dad, who was coming the other way. He must have just hung up the phone. He was crying. He gave me a hug.I watched him cry, a bit dumbfounded.
我坐在起居室的長沙發上，渾身乏力。過了一會兒，我起身向廚房走去，幾乎與從相反方向走來的父親相撞。他想必剛掛上電話，他在哭泣。他擁抱了我。我瞧著他哭著，我有點麻木了。
"Wait, you think he's dead?" I said.

He couldn't manage anything but to cry harder. I must have asked the same question five times. And then, when it finally sank in, I collapsed on the floor。
他除了放聲大哭之外再也說不出話來。我大概重復問了五次之多。接著，當我終于明白過來之后，我癱倒在地上。
