It's the summer of 2001, I'm 13 years old, andwe're at the AAU national championships in Tennessee.
2001年的夏天，那年我13歲，在田納西州打AAU全美冠軍賽。
I was 5’5”, 5’6” tops and maybe like 100 pounds soaking wet. We lost badly, and I played worse.
我當時身高165，最多167，就算渾身濕透體重也才只有90斤左右。我們輸?shù)煤茈y看，我的表現(xiàn)也糟糕透頂。
I wasn't being a hothead. I wasn't mad at losing. I was just … down. I was in my turtle shell.
我并沒有惱火，也沒有因為輸球而發(fā)火，我只是非常的沮喪。就像是烏龜縮回了自己的殼。
I was feeling … well, I guess I was feeling how we're really all taught to feel by these big tournaments,
我想我當時的感覺，正是這些大型比賽總會給人帶來的感覺，
and this cutthroat basketball culture: like we're walking down some do-or-die path.
再加上籃球這種激烈的氛圍：似乎我們走上的是一條不歸路。
"Steph, I'm only going to tell you this one time.
“斯蒂芬, 這些話我只會對你說一次。
After that, this basketball dream … it's going to be what it's going to be.
說完這些，你的籃球夢，該是什么樣就是什么樣吧。
But here's what I'll say: No one gets to write your story but you. Not some scouts. Not some tournament.
但是我想說的是：除了你自己，沒有人能書寫你的人生。不是什么球探，不是什么錦標賽。
Not these other kids, who might do this better or that better. And not ever your last name.
不是那些在某些方面可能比你做的更好的孩子們，更不是你的姓氏。
None of those people, and none of those things, gets to be the author of your story. Just you. So think real hard about it.
這些人，這些事，都不能撰寫你的故事。只有你能。所以你要好好的想一想。
Take your time. And then you go and write what you want to write.
花點時間，然后用你自己的方式來寫你自己的故事吧。
But just know that this story -- it's yours." My Mom says to me.
只要你記得，這個故事，是你的。”我的媽媽對我說。
It's stuck with me throughout my growing-up years,and it's stuck with me throughout my career as a basketball player so far.
這段話一直伴隨我成長，至今也一直伴隨我的籃球生涯。
