When your world is collapsing,

when everything is closing in...

..What you want is to be somewhere else.

Somewhere you can breathe in peace.

A scrap of beauty, far from the noise and ugliness.

But, if there is no escape, then you go there in your dreams...
但如果無路可逃 那么你會(huì)在夢(mèng)中去到那里
..And you paint that landscape into existence.
并將那片景象繪于紙上
This is what happened in China
這正是二十世紀(jì)七十年代
in the 1970s to the artist Mu Xin.
中國畫家木心的親身經(jīng)歷
During Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution,
在毛澤東發(fā)起的文革期間
he was an obvious target.
他是個(gè)顯而易見的目標(biāo)
Middle-class, intellectual,
中產(chǎn)階級(jí) 知識(shí)分子
a lover of decadent, Western art.
一個(gè)腐朽的西方藝術(shù)的崇拜者
Mu Xin was subjected to solitary confinement,
木心被單獨(dú)關(guān)押
forced labour and then house arrest.
強(qiáng)迫勞動(dòng) 最后被軟禁
But the paper supplied for weekly confessions
但是每周供他寫"坦白書"的紙
became the material of his liberation.
恰恰變成了解放他的工具
Mu Xin broke out of his confinement by making visible,
木心沖破了外界對(duì)他的監(jiān)禁
albeit in deadly secrecy,
在極度隱秘中
the landscapes which unfolded in his mind.
將他腦海中的風(fēng)景繪于紙上
The art memory of China, its peaks and its valleys.
中國的藝術(shù)記憶 有起有伏
The culture which had given the rest of the world,
這個(gè)文化古國 早在一千年以前
1,000 years before,
就向世界展示了
true landscape art.
風(fēng)景畫的真諦
While everything else was being smashed up,
當(dāng)其他一切都被打碎
he was determined
木心卻堅(jiān)信
that art, now judged a reactionary crime,
被判為反動(dòng)罪行的繪畫藝術(shù)
would survive.
一定會(huì)生存下來
Like nature itself,
和自然界相似
landscape art has always been an antidote
風(fēng)景畫一直是化解人世間
to the anarchy wrought by the hand of man.
種種動(dòng)亂紛爭(zhēng)的一劑良藥
