It was as a repairman that Gargiulo first insinuated himself into Ellerin's life.

Caught loitering outside their house one night at 2:30 a.m., Gargiulo "stuttered and he started telling me stuff that was very odd," Peterson said—namely that Gargiulo couldn't go home because the FBI was at his house to collect DNA samples from him in the investigation of a murder in Chicago.
