Anybody here has been to Iceland? No? Okay, great
So Iceland unfortunately these days, is sort of famous for a volcano that
really slowed down Europe for a week and also for the banks which have really imploded
And I have to say that I wrote my chapter and spent all my time in Iceland before they had had that financial meltdown
So I'm not really sure what the situation is right now
But Iceland is so fascinating because
here they are, this northernmost country where you can't really grow terribly much
And yet they have some of the highest rates of longevity on Earth
that are truly documented in the birth certificate
It's not a bunch of people who are 40, who are claiming that they're 110

They really, we know that they are quite old there
And whenever I travel to a new country, I do what I call the cemetery tests
Okay, I walk down one row in the cemetery and I see how many tombstones I can find of people who live over 100 and I count them up
Well in Iceland, I had to go down like a quarter of a row to find
It was amazing, way more than anywhere else I've been
I think that everybody lives beyond 100 in Iceland
What's really interesting is you might say it's genetics
But they did a sister study with Icelanders who emigrated to Canada
and all this same sisters start to health problems and die young and so on
So we know that it's not just protective genes
So this is another thing about Iceland. It's really interesting
