Today I am lucky to have the opportunity to interview Pierre Bernard, founder of Houdah Software, publisher of HoudahGeo and HoudahSpot.

Pierre, how did Houdah Software get started?

Houdah Software had a pretty slow start.
Houdah軟件起步很慢。
At one point—while I still had my day job at the Central Bank in Luxembourg

—I had this idea for a revolutionary web browser.
我曾想過要創(chuàng)造一個革命性的網(wǎng)絡(luò)瀏覽器。
I started working on it with the idea of submitting it to the Apple Developer Awards Competition.
于是我開始動手，想著最后能用它參加蘋果開發(fā)者大獎賽。
That was before the release of Mac OS X Tiger.
那時蘋果機 OS X Tiger即將推出
The competition allowed for pre-release products to be submitted, provided they made intensive use of Tiger-only technologies.
競賽要求所有提交的作品起碼應(yīng)該已經(jīng)是預(yù)覽版，并需要大量使用Tiger特有技術(shù)。
My web browser never made it past the alpha version that I submitted to the jury.
而我的瀏覽器即使在最后提交時仍未能達到內(nèi)部測試階段。
So I was looking for a good name for a web browser.
所以我想著給瀏覽器起一個好聽的名字。
I wanted the name to say: better than Safari.
這個名字聽起來感覺應(yīng)該是：比Saferi更好。
I figured that a ride on the back of an elephant must be better than a plain safari.
顯然騎著大象旅行要比普通的旅行者要厲害不少
Hence houdah: a canopied seat placed on the back of an elephant.
因此我選擇了Houdah，意即大象背上的轎子。
I liked the name so much that I named the browser HoudahWeb and kept the Houdah name for future use as a company name.
因為非常喜歡，我不僅將瀏覽器命名為Houdah網(wǎng)絡(luò)，而且將后來的公司也命名為Houdah。
I had always assumed that to geo-code my photos I needed a GPS enabled camera.
我一直以為必須要有全球定位系統(tǒng)（GPS）功能的照相機才能使照片具有位置信息（geo-code )。
But HoudahGeo enables users to carry a separate GPS unit while they take pictures
但是 HoudahGeo讓用戶在拍照時只需額外攜帶單獨的GPS設(shè)備
and it will synchronize the picture time stamps with the GPS log.
將照片的時間與GPS日志的時間相互匹配，從而實現(xiàn)這一功能。
How did you come up with the idea for HoudahGeo?
你是怎么想到這個點子的？
The basic idea behind HoudahGeo is pretty old.
其實背后的想法挺老的
I was not even the first one to have it.
我也不是第一個想到的人。
When I got the idea it seemed so obvious that I figured such a geocoding application must already exist.
我冒出這個點子的時候覺得這樣的位置編碼應(yīng)用一定早就有了。
