Well, each month CNN's i-list takes you toa new country and shows you the people and places changing the world. Thismonth, we travel to Macedonia, where Nick Robertson visited a town that boastsmountains, a vast lake and hundreds of churches, but no tourist.

From a distance, Ohrid looks like itschanged little over the centuries-a fairy-tale faraway place ringed bysnowcapped peaks, reflected in an ancient lake that lies beneath it. Fivethousand years of civilization, almost two millennia of Christianity.
從遠(yuǎn)處來(lái)看，奧赫里德似乎數(shù)百年來(lái)都沒(méi)有什么改變--仍是一個(gè)童話般的遙遠(yuǎn)古城，周圍環(huán)繞著白雪皚皚的山峰，山下有一座古老的湖泊映著倒影。這里的文明已有5000年的歷史，基督教也存在了將近2000年。

Erasmus, who came from Antioch, from Syria,chose this place to build his church, and he built a basilica.

One of the first churches, Christianchurches, of Europe, because imagine: St. Erasmus died in 303, which is 10years before Christianity was even recognized8 by the Roman state.

St. Erasmus's church was just thebeginning. Legend has it there were 365 churches and monasteries in and aroundOhrid. This one, St. Sofia's is on the country's 1,000 denar banknote, and thecity itself for centuries was known as the Jerusalem of the Balkans.

It is a place next to a large lake; lots ofdrinkable water, lots of food, well protected, and it is on the crossroads ofthe roads connecting east and west, north and south.

And at almost every turn it does feel likethere's a church，St. Barbara's, patron saint of miners and carpenters, 19th century;and over there, 17th century, a church for the holy doctors Cosmas and Damian.But it is when you go inside that the churches reveal their beauty. Somefrescoes are 900 years old.

We are fortunate to have some of the oldestfrescoes known to the Christian world here in this church, including somebeautiful angels that are considered to be the most beautiful and the mostserious angels ever painted.

The city is also the birthplace of theCyrillic script, taught by St. Clement at the university he founded here 1,100years ago.

From the winding alleys of the old town tothe myriad archeological digs, Ohrid's past can be seen laid layer upon layer.But nowhere is the arc of history more stunningly revealed than. from the lake.Our boatman, Bobby-named after the great English footballer Bobby Moore-is morethan happy to show us and make us coffee.

Both the lake, also called Ohrid, and thecity are getting some attention. New laws passed by the Macedonian governmentare designed to protect it, bolstering safeguards in place since it became aUNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980. But to have a future, it needs more thanprotecting; it needs people.
這座與奧赫里德同名的湖泊和這座城鎮(zhèn)都受到了關(guān)注。馬其頓政府剛通過(guò)的法律規(guī)定要保護(hù)這里，需要加強(qiáng)警備人員駐守，因?yàn)檫@里在1980年由聯(lián)合國(guó)教科文組織選為世界遺產(chǎn)保護(hù)區(qū)。不過(guò)，這個(gè)地方如果要有中來(lái)，需要的不只是保護(hù)，也需要有人。
