A US military refuelling plane has crashed in Kyrgyzstan after exploding in mid air. The aircraft took off from the US military transit center in Kyrgyzstan's Manas airport, established for NATO operations in neighbouring Afghanistan.

Officials didn't say where the plane was heading and the US transit center declined to comment. A civil aviation official said storm clouds could have caused the explosion. Kyrgyzstan's Emergencies Minister said there were between two and five crew members on board.
