Thousands rushed into gold stores and some even travelled to Hong Kong to secure bargain rates on gold bars.According to the Shanghai Commission of Commerce, during the three day holiday, sales of gold and jewellery rose 108% from a year earlier, leading all other retail categories.

Meanwhile, Beijing also reported a 25 percent increase in gold and jewellery sales. Caibai, a gold retailer in the capital, saw gold sales reach a record high of 200 million yuan over the three day period.
