Gentlemen, these are nerds. They are back. They're back. Don't panic
And they're back who really reach the wallfor that one. That's the clip from the 1980s movie 'Revenge of the nerds II'.And today's job market is all about the nerds. Growing up, your parents mayhave wanted you to be a doctor, a lawyer, a banker, maybe airline pilot. Thosewere the rock stars, right? But the rock stars of today: science, technology, engineering and math. Software engineer ranks as the best job of 2012. This is,according to Careercast, paying around $90,000 a year. Petroleum engineers even average 6figures, a 114,000-dollars a year. Call them nerds, but it's cool to have acareer that pays. They don't come any cooler than Ainiss Ramirez, Scientist andformer professor of mechanical engineering at Yale University.Welcome to the program. Heheh.. Thank you for having me. Ainiss, you callyourself a "science's evangelist". The point here is engaging kids, fromkindergarten to college, in STEM field. How do we do that?
Well, we've gotta get them excited aboutthe science. As you know, some science classes, math classes just don't capturechildren's imaginations. So, we have to figure out how to do that. So, insteadof telling children to be a software engineer, ask them ' Hey, would you liketo be the next Zukberger' You have to put them in contexts and get them excitedabout these careers. That's what I did. The 2012 Teacher of The Year was sointeresting. She gets her kids to design an app in first, or second grade.Write apps, I mean, this is you gotta do it right away, doing something thatthey understand. But when we, you know, talk about the top jobs in this fields, engineering, in particular, still boys' club. Look at these 88,000 degrees werehanded out in 2010, just 15,000 of those went to women. Um, Why aren't womengetting more excited about STEM: science, technology, engineering and Math. Isthat, Is that also happening in the schools? Uh, it's a sad fact, but it'sdefinitely true. Women are about 20% of the bachelor's degrees that are, youknow, coming out the engineering. And it's, there's no gender bias in terms ofhow people perform in math, that means girls and boys do math just equally aswell. The difference is there aren't any role models, also there's a stigma, you know, all girls often hear: you can't do math. We had a Barbie doll onetime said math is hard. So, there's socialization that causes girls to thinkthat, to cause girls to think that they can't do math and then they loseconfidence. But that's the key we need to have a cool role model.
為什么女孩子們沒有男孩子對STEM(科學,技術,工程和數學)感興趣?
