Part 1 Mike is Wasting Time 麥克在浪費時間
Dialogue Script 1
Paula: We've been here for two hours, and we haven't finished a thing yet.
Mike: Look, I wrote the story, so I know what to do.
Paula: But you're not telling people their roles.
Mike: I'm resting now. I'll direct everybody in a minute.
Paula: We have to practice or else we won't win like the last three years in a row.
Mike: Whatever. I'm going for a drink.
Paula: Darn it, Mike! We have to get this done! We don't have much time left.
講解:
Look, I wrote the story, so I know what to do.
tell people their roles,給大家講解每個人的角色安排,這是導演該做的工作。
3. in a minute表示“很快,馬上”,例如:Our guests will be here in a minute! Just a minute! Let me put your tie straight.
4. Paula勸Mike說We have to practice or else we won't win like the last three years in a row. 用一個對話來做例子,---You'd better finish your soup, or else...---Or else what?
但是如果Paula說完...won't win之后,停頓一下再說like the last three years in a row,這樣的意思正好相反,表示“會像之前那樣連續三年沒有贏過”。
I'm going for a drink. I think I'll go for the fruit salad. You're going to keep snakes! Whatever next?
Darn it! 該死!是Damn it!
Dialogue Script 2
Jim: I have no idea what to do.
Paula: Mike needs to get off his butt and start giving us direction.
Jim: Why aren't you directing it? You're much better at it than Mike.
Paula: Mike wrote it, so he feels like it belongs to him.
Jim: That's stupid. My grandparents are coming to the show.
Paula: Maybe he'll come back and do something useful for a change.
Jim: I don't want to disappoint my grandma. She's looking forward to this play.
講解:
I have no idea what to do. I don't know what to do. I have no idea what you're talking about.
get off someone's butt,表示“某人該起身有所行動”。 Get off your butts and do some work!
I gave him full directions to enable him to find the train station. 這里用的是be good at something的比較級形式,be better at something。
Dialogue Script 3
Paula: Mike, if you don't start directing the play, I will.
Mike: I am directing the play. You're just not listening.
Paula: You're the one that's not listening. Nobody has a clue what to do.
Mike: Just mind your own business.
Paula: I'm trying to keep this play from becoming a disaster.
Mike: If you'd just listen to me read the storyline...
Paula: Not again!
Mike: As many times as it takes. Now go get the costume.
Paula: You can't boss people around!
Mike: I'm the director, so you have to do what I say.
Paula: Then why don't you direct?
Mike: Because you're getting in the way. So shut up.
Paula: You're not getting rid of me that easily.
Mike: If you want to quit, just say so. We don't need you anyway.
Paula: I helped you right from the start.
Mike: Keep quiet until it's your turn to speak. Got it?
講解:
I will. I will direct the play.
Nobody has a clue what to do. 那么這里的have a clue to do something也表示“知道該做什么”的意思,跟上面的have an idea to do something和know to do something一樣。
Just mind your own business. 我們用一個對話做例子,---How old were you when your parents got divorced? ---Mind your own business! I'm trying to keep this play from becoming a disaster.
比如說,---So, you still won't tell me who your girlfriend is. ---Not again! I'm tired of this question.
As many times as it takes. You can't boss people around! He's always bossing his wife around.
Because you're getting in the way. get in the way表示“礙別人的事,阻礙某人做某事”,跟stand in someone's way 差不多。 If you want to study music, we won't stand in your way.
7. 既然get in the way 表示“礙別人的事,阻礙某人做某事”,那么我們就可以用get out of the way表示“別礙事,擺脫阻礙”。If you don't want to join us, get out of the way. Mike還讓Paula閉嘴,Shut up! Shut your mouth up!
You're not getting rid of me that easily. be /get rid of someone or something He was such a nuisance! I'm glad to be rid of him. We ordered three pizzas and now we can't get rid of them.
說到這個quit,有一個習語跟我們上面說的be/get rid of sb or sth差不多,就是be quit of sb/sth,也表示“擺脫,脫離某人某物”,例如,I want to be quit of the responsibility. You're well quit of him.
Keep quiet until it's your turn to speak. Got it? Keep quite.
