China's fifth-manned space mission takes off

Liftoff... China's fifth-manned space mission launched on Tuesday from the Gobi desert in the country's far west. The three astronauts are headed toward the experimental Tiangong or Heavenly Palace space lab where they will conduct research and test equipment. They are also set to give a presentation to students watching from Earth during their 15 days in space, the longest manned mission for China's space program. It is the latest step toward the development of a Chinese space station. President Xi Jinping oversaw the launch and spoke to the astronauts before they blasted off, describing their mission as "glorious and sacred". Although still far off from space superpowers Russia and the United States, China continues to advance its program amid U.S. budget cuts and trends seeing the privatization of space travel.

Chinese farmer arrested over alien hoax

This is the "alien" a Chinese farmer claimed he electrocuted to death three months ago after finding it on the bank of the Yellow River. The man, identified as Li from eastern China's Shandong province, posted about the encounter on his blog. It soon became an Internet hit. But on Wednesday the hoax was officially up after Li admitted that he had built the extraterrestrial with wire ropes and bone glue. After interrogation, Li confessed he got his inspiration from a Hollywood movie.

I liked Paul -- the alien in the movie -- very much. So I created my own version based on Paul the character." Li is being held in detention for five days on charges of fabricating lies and disrupting normal social order.

Newtown marks six month anniversary of massacre

(Sound of bells) Church bells tolled at the precise moment six months ago when a gunman embarked on a shooting rampage at a Newtown Connecticut elementary school killing 26 people, 20 of them children. Under a gray sky, relatives and friends of the victims marked the occasion with an anti-gun violence rally. Teresa Rousseau's daughter Lauren was one of the victims remembered during a moment of silence.

Despite this , Newtown resident Monte Frank says he remains hopeful. "I'm very encouraged with the progress we've made. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Before the horrible events happened here, gun safety legislation was the third rail of American politics. Since then, we've received the majority of the votes in the Senate on major bills, but for the ridiculous filibuster rules, we would have a safer society now," Many here say they hope to revive the push for more gun control, including more expansive background checks, which is favored by most Americans.
