HOLIDAYS ARE REMEMBERING DAYS
Of course you look forward to holidays with great pleasure. You probably can hardly wait for Christmas, your birthday, and Fourth of July.
Such days mean good times, presents, picnics, parades, and often visits with friends or relatives.
But these days have a meaning that is deeper than that of merely having a good time.
Why is it that throughout our land factories, stores, schools, and offices are closed, and everyone takes part in some kind of celebration?
The reason is that great events have happened in the history of our nation and of the world, events which people want ever to remember.
Fourth of July is set aside so that we shall not forget the long, hard struggle through which our nation went in order to win its freedom.
Armistice Day and Memorial Day remind us of the brave men who have given their lives in defense of our country.
On Washington's Birthday and Lincoln's Birthday we honor those great leaders of our people.
So, every holiday has its own special meaning. Holidays are happy days for us all, and they should be;
所以,每個節日都有其特殊的含義。假期對我們大家來說都是快樂的日子,也應該是;
but we should not forget the deeper meaning that each has.
If we are happy and comfortable today, it is because others have worked, braved dangers, and perhaps even suffered for us.
We want to honor them every year. In this last part of your book you will read stories and poems
which tell of some holidays that we so much enjoy.
As you read, try to see how each story and poem expresses the true meaning of the holiday.
