As soon as they sat down to supper, he gave Aladdin’s mother an account of his travels, saying that for forty years he had been away from home, in order to see the wonders of distant countries. Then, turning toward Aladdin, he asked his name. “I am called Aladdin,” said he. “Well, Aladdin,” said the magician, “what business do you follow?”
他們一坐下來吃晚飯，他就給阿拉丁的母親講述了他的旅行經(jīng)歷，說他離開家已經(jīng)四十年了，為的是去看看遙遠(yuǎn)國(guó)家的奇觀。然后他轉(zhuǎn)向阿拉丁，問他的名字。“我叫阿拉丁。”他說。“阿拉丁，”魔術(shù)師說，“你在干什么?”
At this question Aladdin hung down his head and was not a little ashamed when his mother made answer: “Aladdin is an idle fellow; his father did all he could to teach him his trade, but could not succeed; and since his death, in spite of all I can say to him, he does nothing but idle away his time in the streets, so that I despair of his ever coming to any good.” With these words the poor woman burst into tears, and the magician, turning to Aladdin, said: “This is not well, nephew; you must think of making a living. I will help you as far as I may. What think you—shall I take a shop and furnish it for you?” Aladdin was overjoyed at the idea, for he thought there was little labor in keeping a shop, and he told his uncle this would suit him better than anything else.
聽到這個(gè)問題，阿拉丁垂下頭，當(dāng)他母親回答他時(shí)，他感到非常羞愧：“阿拉丁是個(gè)游手好閑的家伙;他的父親盡其所能教他這一行，但沒有成功； 自從他死后，盡管我能對(duì)他說些什么，他卻什么也不做，只是在街上游手好閑，因此我對(duì)他將來不會(huì)有什么好處感到絕望。” 說完這句話，這個(gè)可憐的女人突然哭了起來，魔術(shù)師轉(zhuǎn)身對(duì)阿拉丁說：“這可不太好，侄兒;你必須考慮謀生。我將盡我所能幫助你。你覺得怎么樣——要不要我開個(gè)商店給你布置一下?”阿拉丁一想到這個(gè)主意就非常高興，因?yàn)樗J(rèn)為經(jīng)營(yíng)一家商店幾乎不需要什么勞動(dòng)，他告訴他叔叔這比其他任何東西都更適合他。
“I will take you with me tomorrow,” said the magician, “clothe you as handsomely as the best merchants in the city, and then we will open a shop.”
“我明天會(huì)帶你一起去，”魔術(shù)師說，“把你打扮得像城里最好的商人一樣漂亮，然后我們就開一家商店。”
Aladdin’s mother then thanked him very heartily, and begged Aladdin to behave so as to prove himself worthy of the good fortune promised by his kind uncle.
于是阿拉丁的母親衷心地感謝他，并懇求阿拉丁表現(xiàn)好一點(diǎn)，以證明自己配得上他好心的叔叔所許諾的好運(yùn)。
