Cyrus Hall McCormick saw that there was great need of a machine to harvest wheat. Before men could getthe golden grain into the barns, much of it was wasted or spoiled. So the young man thought and worked and tried things until he made a successful reaper.Someone watched the slow weaving of yarn into cloth by hand. He said, “Ibelieve we can make a machine to do that work. Then we shall be able to do it faster and make more cloth in less time.”

When men have needed amachine badly enough, they have put their brains and their hands to work at thejob of making one. So today we live in a world of machines. There is hardly athing we eat or wear that has not at some stage been put through a machine. And that machine has come from the long and careful work of some person.

Can you make a list of all the machines you have yourself used? Can you tell how they make life easier? Itwould be fun to imagine what you would have to do if all machines were takenaway for twenty-four hours. You would surely have to carry water. What other things would you have to do?
