I heard a low cry and, looking down. I saw a man lying on his back with a pile of earth over his legs.

Sliding down, I soon reached his side, and what was my surprise to look into the face of my own good master!
我滑下戰壕，很快到達他的身邊，讓我驚訝的是，我看到的竟是我主人的面龐！
I dared not bark; so I licked his face and his hands and wagged my tail very hard.
我不敢大叫；于是我舔他的臉和手，并使勁兒搖尾巴。
Soon he opened his eyes and saw me.
他很快睜開了眼睛，看到了我。
Oh, joy! he knew me at once; for a good master always knows his own dog, just as a good dog always knows his own master.
啊，太好了！他馬上認出了我；因為一個好的主人總是認識自己的狗，就像一只好狗也總是認識自己的主人一樣。
Good old Jacques, he said, "how did you ever get here?"

How happy I was to hear him speak those words!

I stood close by my master's side, so that he could help himself from my little saddle.
我緊靠在主人的身邊，這樣他就能從我背的小馬鞍里自己拿東西了。
"Come on the other side, old fellow," he said. "This arm feels strange."

So I went around to the other side, while he drank something from a little bottle that he found in one of my pockets.

Then, finding paper and a pencil, he wrote a few words.
接著，他找了一張紙和一支筆，在紙上寫了兒句話。
"A letter to my mistress," thought I. "I'll take it to her as soon as I can."

There was water in the ditch, and the pain in my leg made me want a cool drink, but I dared not stop for this.
