That very day Paddy went to the woods, and gathered holly and cut a little evergreen tree and some cedar branches and things like that.
He hung them all around the walls of the dark cave and stood the little evergreen tree up in one corner.
After that he sang the songs that the children in the log house had sung, and he thought that this was Christmas.
For a little while Paddy was very happy.
Then he began to feel that something was wrong; so he went to his father and his mother and his uncle and his aunt and waked them up.
Uncle Bear was wrong, he said. "This isn't Christmas.

There is something more, because when boys and girls have it, it's pretty, and it's lots of fun, and it makes you feel good from the inside out.
This is pretty, and it's fun; but it doesn't make me feel good from the inside out."
This time it was Aunt Bear who said she would find out what Christmas is.
Down the mountain she crept to the little log house, and listened and looked and sniffed. Then she came back to Paddy.
Christmas, said Aunt Bear, "is getting presents. You get toys and good things to eat.
See, I brought you some presents on my back."
